Fluoxetine
Fluoxetine is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is primarily used to treat mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic disorder. Fluoxetine works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain that helps regulate mood, emotions, and behavior. In addition to depression and anxiety-related conditions, Fluoxetine is also prescribed for bulimia nervosa and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Fluoxetine is usually taken once daily, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare provider. It is important not to stop the medication suddenly without medical advice, as this may lead to withdrawal-like symptoms or a return of underlying symptoms. Regular follow-up with a doctor ensures safe and effective use of the medication. By improving serotonin balance, it helps reduce symptoms such as persistent sadness, intrusive thoughts, mood swings, and certain compulsive behaviors.
